Did Messi Sign a New Contract with Barcelona

Alongside Messi`s return, the Blaugrana have improved the squad in the summer transfer window with the additions of fellow Argentinian Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay, among others. Messi is on holiday with his family after his Copa America glory with Argentina last weekend, which was his first senior trophy with his national team. Barcelona president Joan Laporta ruled out a possible return at his press conference a day later: “I don`t want to raise false hopes,” he said. The negotiations with Messi are over and that brought us here without an agreement because of the [La Liga] salary limit. Leo wanted to stay, so he`s not happy. We all wanted him to stay, but now, like us, he is facing the reality of what happened. A reality that cannot be changed. Messi has left Barcelona fans with a few lines of hope for the future: Lionel Messi will stay at Barcelona, this has never been in doubt and will be announced soon. 🔵🔴 #FCBPSG never had any real luck this summer. NO conversations.

Only Barça for Leo. ❌The new contract will run until June 2026 instead of 2023 to help the club – as @ferrancorreas reported. The road to Messi`s contract has been long. Details of the sensational numbers from his previous contract were leaked in the middle of his offer last year to leave the only professional club he ever played for. Messi became a free agent this summer after his contract expired. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, whose coach Pep Guardiola managed Messi`s Barcelona teams from 2008 to 2012, courted the six-time Ballon d`Or winner after expressing a desire to leave Catalonia. This came after an 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last August. PSG coach and fellow Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino can add Messi to his ever-growing talent team, having already strengthened his squad this summer with the signings of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ashraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The massive pay cut was, according to numerous reports, the only viable way for Barcelona to re-sign Messi, as the club has to lose nearly $250 million in annual salaries just to meet the financial requirements of La Liga`s salary rules. The books are so unbalanced that Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia – the club`s first three summer signings, all as free agents – are not yet registered, as Barcelona are reportedly in violation of La Liga`s financial regulations at that time. So, technically, it`s not La Liga`s fault, but FC Barcelona`s non-compliance with La Liga rules. The blame game changed significantly at this press conference: Laporta said he abide by the rules of La Liga`s “Financial Fair Play” team, and although they were ultimately the reason Messi could not sign, he said it was the club`s two previous administrations that put the club in financial disarray. Laporta sent the message that without his mismanagement, Messi`s signing wouldn`t have been a problem. He highlighted how he maintained his share of the deal by striking a deal with Messi. It was simply not possible to achieve it due to the budgetary rules of the La Liga team. Messi may still be leaving the club to finish his career elsewhere, but he continues to produce at elite level and it makes sense that he will stay at Barça as long as he does. Observers say accepting the money would have meant that the two giants would have tied up financially with La Liga in the coming decades, thus permanently giving up their Super League ambitions.

This is the only way to explain why Barcelona, who are expected to be worth more than $1 billion, would reject this type of investment, which would have been in line with the proposed Super League cash advance. There is a mindset that Barcelona knew from the beginning that they would never be able to sign Messi and adjust his salary for the coming season within the limits of his player`s budget. Given the way the transfer season went, and without buyers for its highly paid players, there was no way for Barcelona to make way for Messi under the league`s rules. Given Barcelona`s difficult financial situation, it`s hard to imagine how Messi and Co. will improve last season`s 3rd place in La Liga (7 points behind champions Atletico Madrid and 5 behind rivals Real Madrid). .
